Beyond Seed Phrases: Evaluating the Real-World Adoption of ERC-4337 Wallets

par LCX Team · August 10, 2026

Three years ago, ERC-4337 promised to solve one of crypto’s oldest UX problems: the seed phrase. No more 12 cryptic words standing between a new user and their first transaction. No more losing funds permanently because of a forgotten backup. Wallets were supposed to start feeling like normal apps: log in with a fingerprint, let an app cover your gas fee, recover access through a trusted contact instead of a piece of paper.

So, three years in, how far has that promise actually come? The picture is more nuanced than a simple yes or no, and understanding why is genuinely useful for anyone trying to make sense of where Web3 UX stands today.

A Quick Refresher: What ERC-4337 Actually Does

ERC-4337 went live on Ethereum mainnet in March 2023. Instead of requiring a protocol-level hard fork, it built account abstraction as a layer on top of Ethereum using three core pieces:

  • UserOperations, a new kind of “intent” object that replaces a traditional transaction. It describes what the user wants to happen, rather than a raw signed transaction from a private key.
  • Bundlers, nodes that collect UserOperations from a separate mempool and package them into an actual transaction sent to the blockchain.
  • The EntryPoint contract, a singleton smart contract that validates and executes UserOperations, calling into the user’s own smart contract wallet.

The result is a wallet that is a smart contract rather than a key pair. That distinction sounds technical, but it is the whole point: a smart contract can define its own rules. It can say “let this app pay my gas,” or “let these three friends restore my access if I lose my device,” or “let me pay fees in USDC instead of ETH.” None of that is possible with a traditional Externally Owned Account (EOA), which only understands one thing: a signature from a single private key.

Where Adoption Actually Landed

By early-to-mid 2026, ERC-4337 is no longer an experiment; it is genuinely production infrastructure. Since launching on Ethereum mainnet in March 2023, the standard has enabled over 40 million smart accounts and processed more than 100 million transactions, a tenfold increase from the previous year. Industry estimates going into late 2025 anticipated the ecosystem crossing well over 200 million smart accounts, with ERC-4337 combined with the newer EIP-7702 standard opening additional pathways for adoption.

Adoption is not evenly spread across the ecosystem. Base, Polygon, and Optimism lead ERC-4337 adoption, with Base seeing particularly strong growth following Coinbase’s infrastructure investment in the standard. That pattern tracks closely with which chains had a major consumer-facing wallet backing account abstraction early. Coinbase’s own Smart Wallet, for example, launched as a passkey-based ERC-4337 wallet that works across Base and several other major networks.

Gas sponsorship, one of ERC-4337’s headline features, has also become mainstream infrastructure rather than a novelty. The vast majority of UserOperations now leverage paymasters, with tens of millions of dollars in gas fees sponsored by applications on behalf of their users. In practice, this means a growing share of people transacting on-chain today have never had to buy ETH just to move a stablecoin or mint an NFT.

Why Seed Phrases Are Still Around

Understanding why seed phrases have not disappeared entirely tells us a lot about how large-scale infrastructure transitions actually happen.

  1. Legacy accounts did not disappear overnight. Millions of EOAs already existed before ERC-4337 shipped, holding years of transaction history, ENS names, and reputation. Migrating to a brand-new smart contract address meant leaving that history behind. For a period, there was no clean way to upgrade an existing wallet into a smart account; users could only create a new one.
  2. EIP-7702 changed the migration math. This is arguably the most important recent development in the space. Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade, which shipped on May 7, 2025, introduced EIP-7702, a mechanism that lets existing EOAs delegate to smart contract logic without abandoning their address or history. In practical terms, it turns the wallet a person already has into an upgradeable smart account on demand, and major wallets including MetaMask, Rabby, and Trust integrated support for it throughout 2025. This resolved the “cold start” problem that had slowed pure ERC-4337 migration: users no longer need to choose between keeping their existing address and gaining smart-account features.
  3. Standards are converging rather than competing. By 2026, the technical landscape looks like this: EIP-7702 covers legacy EOAs, ERC-4337 covers newly created smart accounts, and newer modular standards like ERC-6900 and ERC-7579 handle extensions on top of both. This gives developers considerable flexibility, though it also means wallets need time to implement and coordinate support across several standards at once.
  4. Recovery mechanisms are being built with deliberate caution. Wallets built around passkeys and social recovery, such as Argent, still offer a backup path alongside newer recovery options. Argent’s guardian-based recovery system, for instance, includes a built-in security delay window so a stolen device cannot instantly drain funds. That design choice prioritizes safety over speed, which is a reasonable trade-off while trust in these newer recovery models continues to build across the ecosystem.

What Mainstream Users Actually Feel Today

Strip away the acronyms, and the real-world experience has shifted meaningfully. Passkey-based logins using Face ID or Windows Hello are now a default onboarding path for wallets like Coinbase Smart Wallet and Argent, with no phrase to write down for a first-time user. Gas sponsorship means someone can receive a stablecoin, spend it, and never need to think about “gas” as a concept. Batched transactions mean a single tap can approve and execute an action that previously required two or three separate signatures.

None of this required users to understand UserOperations, bundlers, or EntryPoint contracts, which is exactly the point. Good infrastructure is designed to disappear.

Conclusion

Account abstraction has moved from a promising specification to genuine production infrastructure powering tens of millions of accounts and a meaningful share of daily on-chain activity. The technical foundation that ERC-4337 established in 2023 proved sound early on; what took longer was the practical work of bringing existing users, wallets, and infrastructure along without asking anyone to start from scratch. EIP-7702 addressed that gap directly, and its effects are still expanding across the ecosystem through 2026.

The seed phrase has not vanished, but its role has changed. For a growing number of users, particularly those onboarding through wallets built after 2024, it now functions as a fallback rather than the primary way of interacting with a wallet. As EIP-7702 adoption deepens and modular standards mature, that shift is likely to continue. For builders and users evaluating Web3 UX today, the more relevant question is not whether account abstraction has arrived, but how much of the on-chain experience is already running on it without most people noticing.
