What is $RPL?

Rocket Pool is a decentralized liquid staking protocol that allows users to earn rewards on their ETH holdings. It provides a decentralized node operator network, enabling users to either join the network or run their own nodes with a minimum of 16 ETH. The platform also introduces the concept of liquid staking, where users benefit from an increasing exchange rate rather than adding to their initial staked collateral.

Additionally, Rocket Pool offers smart nodes, which are a custom node software that allows anyone to run a node on its network, thereby democratizing the staking process. It was founded by David Rugendyke, a senior developer with a computer science background, in late 2016.

What makes Rocket Pool unique?

Rocket Pool allows any ETH holders to earn a yield through protocol staking without the need to run their own node. Unlike Ethereum’s native system, which requires a minimum of 32 ETH for staking, Rocket Pool has no such limit, allowing individuals to stake any amount. This inclusivity is further enhanced by its rETH token, a tokenized version of staked ETH in Rocket Pool. This token enables users to stake as little as 0.01 ETH and as much as 32 ETH.

The rETH accrues staking rewards based on the performance of the entire network of node operators, with its value protected against slashing through insurance mechanisms. Rocket Pool node operators can develop minipools for higher ETH staking rewards, adding another layer to the platform’s functionality.

Rocket Pool is also heavily compared against its biggest competitor, Lido. Rocket Pool focuses on decentralization and trustlessness where node operators can join the staking network freely. Whereas Lido relies on a permissioned set of validators.
